everything from Basic Horsemanship to Competition Performance Events, Rancho Rocoso
does it all. Our Basic Horsemanship Clinics start off easy, covering subjects
such as proper tack, mounting and dismounting, trailer loading and basic reining.
For advanced participants interested in Competitive Performance, we offer cattle
clinics in such events as Working Cow Horse, Herd Work, Fencing and Cutting. We
also offer Reining and Speed Events. Clinics and seminars on various levels of
riding skills, from very basic riding lessons to advanced techniques, are held.
In fact, we hold a special clinic for any subject for which there is enough interest
or demand. Horse not loading in the trailer right? Not staying tied properly?
Does your horse have behavioral problems? We can help! Ranch Rides are the second
and third weekend of every month. Rancho Rocoso rides all over the 6000 acre ranch.
We have miles of riding space, with scenery unequaled in Central Texas, and opportunities
to encounter all kinds of different game. Practice what you and your horse have
learned! Participants are responsible for their own horse and tack. $35.00 per
person, unless prior arrangements are made. Bring your own lunch. All horses must
have a negative Coggins test within the past ten months. No horses with open wounds
or other obvious health problems. All horses must be shod. Breast collar recommended.
Riding helmets, at rider's discretion. All riders must be able to control their
mounts. No open-toed shoes for riders. Absolutely no alcoholic beverages. Rancho
Rocoso is located on a working cattle ranch. Cattle need to be cared for. Want
to help? We do all phases of cow work necessary for the wellbeing of the animal
and ranch. This can include moving the cattle from one pasture to another, gathering
the cattle and moving them to pens to be worked, pen work--- pairing the right
calf with the right cow, sorting, vaccinating, cutting dry cattle out of the bunch,
etc.. See how it's really done; participate as much or as little as you wish.
One day: $50.00 Two days: $90.00 Riders are responsible for the same items as
a Ranch Ride, with the exception that lunch and drinks will be provided. This
is a great opportunity for horse and rider to experience ranch life. Rancho Rocoso
hosts special events. For example, we have Ranch Pasture Team Penning competitions,
Ranch Team Sorting, Ranch Alleywork, and Ranch Team Pasture Gathering competitions.
These competitions are for everyone; you don't have to be an expert at all to
participate. In fact, it's not how fast the event is completed that wins, but
how well the cattle are handled overall; just like it's done everyday on a working
ranch. Don't worry if you have no prior experience; real cowboys help the ones
less skilled. To participate in our events your horse must have a current negative
Coggins test, all horses must be visibly healthy, no alcohol is allowed, and participants
bring their own lunch. We want you to have all the fun you can, without hurting
yourself or someone else! Rancho Rocoso has other Special Activities to take advantage
of. For example, we offer horseback camping with primitive campsites, ranch rides
with fishing, scavenger hunts on a ranch ride, or if you wish, you may customize
your horse vacation from one to three days. These special activities are custom
priced, with group and club rates available. Please call or email for information.
Mike and Becky Hansen have been in the agriculture business all their lives. Like
their parents before them, they were born into ranching and horse raising. After
owning and operating a Hunting Lodge and Guest Ranch, and ranching for 30+ years
in the mountains of New Mexico, they moved their operation to central Texas. With
families rich in ranching and horse raising heritage, it was only natural to continue
the tradition. Their expertise with horses developed from skills and knowledge
passed on by their families, and more than 30 years' experience of their own.
They have raised and trained top performers in the APHA, AQHA, PRCA, PTHA and
WPRCA as well as an untold number of top ranch horses. Armed with the knowledge
and ability to train horses and the people who ride them, Mike and Becky are ready
to offer this experience to the horse owners of central Texas. Rancho Rocoso Riding
